    * Central Park LapsCentral Park Laps

    Time: 07:00

    Cyclists hardy of spirit, early of rising and tolerant of repeated vistas of verdant greenery and bulging spandex meet at 7 a.m. at the Columbus Circle entrance to Central Park, between the Ferrara coffee stand and the statue of the Maine. We do two to three conversational laps, depending on the crowd, that can be relaxed or competitive, depending on the mood. Bob Nelson can easily be persuaded to look at your position on the bike and offer tips on bike fit and climbing. Wet pavement at 9 p.m. the night before almost always cancels; if in doubt, contact Bob at fastnfab (at) yahoo (dot) com or 212-567-7160.

Eastern Mountain Sports, another sponsor, promises giveaways of bike equipment throughout the expo. Once a schedule of events is published, we’ll post details of Fast and Fab outings to the expo, so mark your calendar. More info: Bob Nelson, fastnfab@yahoo.com or 212-567-7160.

    * Not the Montauk CenturyNot the Montauk Century

    Time: 07:00

    With the change in the Five Boro Bike Club’s route out to Montauk, we’ll not be riding that tour this year, but the salt spray and flat back roads punctuated with coffee shops still beckon. Meet on the first car of the 6:39 a.m. Long Island Rail Road train from Penn Station to Forest Hills, or at 7 a.m. at Gotta Getta Bagel on 71st Ave. a block and a half north of the Forest Hills train station. At the end of the ride, the Harvest on Fort Pond restaurant provides a meal worthy of 130 mi. on the bike, reservation required, and we’ll be on the 7:33 p.m. train back to Penn Station. If riding some portion of Patrick Chin-Hong’s meticulous cue sheet interests you, don’t be shy, let the ride leaders know. Kathleen Haley and Bob Nelson take the plunge, and Dominic Lampasi joins the ride at the Babylon Bean Coffee House at Main and Deer Park in Babylon. Rain date will be the following Sunday. For the cue sheet or more info, contact Bob at fastnfab (at) yahoo.com or 212-567-7160.

    * Ride of SilenceRide of Silence

    Time: 18:45

    This memorial ride honors cyclists whose lives were lost in traffic crashes. We’ll maintain silence and will ride at a stately pace, as if we were riding in a funeral procession. Similar rides are being held all over the world on this day as part of an international movement; see www.rideofsilence.org. Riders who have lost a friend or family member to traffic mayhem are requested to wear a black armband or other attributes of mourning. Please wear a helmet and bring front and rear lights for evening riding. Meet at 6:45 p.m. at Pier 40 in Hudson River Park (enter at Houston and West Streets). Expect a short ride of about 10 mi. at a moderate pace, rain or shine. Bob Nelson: fastnfab (at) yahoo (dot) com or 212-567-7160.

    * Bloomin' MetricBloomin' Metric

    Time: 07:07

    Rolling hills, winding back roads, views of Long Island and springtime! are the chief attractions at the Bloomin’ Metric bike tour, owned and operated by Sound Cyclists of Connecticut (http://www.soundcyclists.com/BloominMetric.htm). Distances are 25 mi., 75 km (46.5 mi.) or 100 km (62 mi.). For the second year, the Bloomin' Metric is capping registration and was at 40 percent of the cap by the end of February. Riders who plan to participate should register soon. Christine Bisceglie is happy to meet riders at the Westport train station and shepherd them to the new starting location, Sherwood Island State Park; the 7:07 a.m. from Grand Central will get you there in time and you will need a Metro North bike pass. There’s a picnic with live music after the ride, and registration fees climb in early May. Early info is that at least a half-dozen Fast and Fab riders are going. E-mail Chris at cbisceglie (at) yahoo (dot) com for any further info on the ride or to arrange a pick-up at the train station.

    * John Chapman RideJohn Chapman Ride

    Time: 07:30

    John died on what we used to call the New Hope Ride last year, struck by a weaving motorist who may have been texting or drunk, but who has never been apprehended. Our ride this year is equal parts long-distance training, sharing memories of John and having a blast out in the sticks. As usual, we’ll meet at 7:30 a.m. Saturday near the World Trade Center PATH station. Riders will drop bags in a rented pickup, take the PATH to Newark’s Penn Station and then, with cue sheets and the pickup as our support, begin the 90 mi. to the Weisel Hostel in Nockamixon State Park, Quakertown, Pa., about 30 mi. northwest of New Hope. En route, we’ll have stops for food and fuel, including New Hope, and yes, the pickup will pick up tired riders. Monday we’ll cycle back to Newark via a different route, avoiding Memorial Day parades where possible. NJ Transit will not take bikes on a holiday Monday, so taking the train is not an option for the ride back, though of course the pickup is such an option. To hold your place in the ride, write a check for $ 100 to Bob Nelson at 165 Seaman Ave., Apt. 3H, New York, NY 10034-1989. The 0, which is non-refundable after May 15, covers for two nights at the hostel, van rental and SAG supplies. We do need a person to help with driving the van, and will switch off among the riders if we don’t find such a person. Bob Nelson: fastnfab (at) yahoo (dot) com or 212-567-7160.
